Spa review: Radisson Edwardian's East River Spa

The gently heated Hammam marble loungers offer a heavenly respite from the outside world

Picture your typical Bond villain’s hideaway – cavernous spaces, thoughtfully dotted with modern furniture and futuristic lighting – and you’re not far from the impressive entrance lobby of the four-star Radisson Edwardian New Providence Wharf Hotel in Canary Wharf.

Head upstairs, however, and the heavenly therapists at the East River Spa will look after you in a way more fitting to the urbane international spy himself – or his leading lady.

Taking up the whole of the first floor, the focus of the spa and gym is on restoring vitality and energy in indulgent, contemporary surroundings. And indulgent they certainly are.

From signature therapies such as the Algotherm Soap Massage (£95) to couples-only treatments in a dedicated couples’ treatment room, the spa is a haven for time-poor business travellers and City workers alike.

I went for the Microdermabrasion and Oxygen Therapy (£90), which, under the expert hands of senior therapist Kerstin Schaefer, was easily the most soothing 60 minutes of my entire year. I emerged exfoliated, rejuvenated and visibly plumper of skin.

Forty winks in the spa’s relaxation suite, where I stretched like a blissed-out feline on one of the gently warmed Hamman marble loungers (with a peppermint tea and hot mince pies for company), rounded off a sublime afternoon.

And one that was absolutely worthy of the great Mr Bond himself.
