How to keep warm on the road this winter
The Blankie: just one way to keep snug as a bug
Business travellers: banish the chills! Get cosy with our fab suggestions for keeping toasty until you reach the warmth of your Expotel hotel.
As temperatures plummet in what seems like one of the coldest winters we’ve experienced in decades, it’s never been more crucial to keep warm, especially if you’re on the road and hours away from the comfort of a hotel bed.
Hot tunes
If you want music on the go, without the Arctic conditions making your ears cold, then a Headphone Beanie (£34.94, including delivery; The Travelling Souk; 01865 821835) could be just the ticket. With in-built headphones that plug into your iPod, you can keep your ears warm and your toes tapping while you’re travelling this winter.
Cashmere luxury
Why not indulge yourself while you’re keeping warm with a bit of super-warm cashmere? Grab a scarf from Madeleine Thompson’s range (£208; Matches; 0870 067 8838) or a luxurious wrap from The Travelwrap Company (£191; 0844 800 1296), which comes hand finished from the heart of Scotland.
Snuggle up
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a snuggle – a blanket with sleeves and the last word in getting cosy. It keeps you warm, with your hands free to grab a hot drink or work on your laptop while travelling on a train or plane (£14.99; JML Direct; 0871 221 2677).
Socks appeal
To keep your toes toasty, treat yourself to a pair of super soft, lightweight socks made from the coat of an alpaca (cute as a button and looks like a small llama). Perilla does everyday socks (£12.26 per pair), or leave room in your suitcase for its range of bedsocks (£18.39 per pair). Call 01886 853615 to find out more.
Fab flasks
Don’t forget your trusty Thermos while you’re on the road – the original and best way to store a hot drink to keep warm. As well as flasks like the Stainless King 0.47L (£19.99, from John Lewis and Lakeland), the Everyday 450 travel mug (£3.99–4.99, from Asda and Debenhams) fits most car cup holders, making it ideal for chilly motorway journeys.
Glove story
You can now get gloves with built-in warmers, which are powered by USB (£13.47; Mobile Fun; 0844 249 5060) and can plug into a laptop or PC. They gently defrost your fingers so you can type and get some work done on the road, even in the coldest conditions. Genius!
